541 Eatery & Exchange

Posted in: Awards , Community Events

As designers, we have an opportunity to solve some of the biggest issues facing communities today.

The AIA Film Challenge amplifies stories of architects partnering with communities to design a healthy, sustainable and just world. The AIA asked participants to submit a mini-documentary film highlighting architecture projects that are transforming communities through the power of design and collaboration. Our team worked with 541 Eatery & Exchange and the Barton Village BIA to create a short film, telling the story of how 541 Eatery & Exchange exemplifies a design opportunity that goes beyond the built environment.

Our film has been shortlisted for the AIA National Film Challenge, and we now have an exciting opportunity to win a cash prize for 541. Over the years, 541 Barton St. evolved from a bank to closed off, uninviting rental housing in one of Hamilton’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Today, 541 Eatery & Exchange is a welcoming, accessible and beautiful space. The socially conscious café has become a beacon of hope to the residents of Barton Village.

In addition to the People’s Choice Award, the panel of judges will select the Grand Prize Winner, the Runner Up, and the Third Place Winner based on how well films adhere to the prompt as well as the storytelling arc, architectural placement, and technical merit. The film with the most votes by October 4 will win the People’s Choice Award, a $2,000 cash prize, and more.
