The CaGBC has announced the winners of the 2020 Leadership and Green Building Excellence Awards, which recognize individuals and organizations that demonstrate outstanding industry leadership and have made significant contributions to CaGBC’s mission to advance green building in Canada.
mcCallumSather’s workspace was awarded the CaGBC Green Building Excellence – Tenant Improvement Award. Our architectural, mechanical engineering and interior design team took on this design and retrofit of our office in Westinghouse HQ. Our office has resulted in projected energy savings of over 59% and energy cost savings of 28%. Our team, together with RDH Building Science, completed an energy consumption, cost and Net Present Value (NPV) analysis which evaluated each mechanical concept in the categories of energy efficiency, GHG emissions, annual energy costs, capital costs, and NPV savings, taking into account assumed escalating utility rates over a 10 year period. The mechanical design of the distributed water-source heat pump system incorporates two (2) high-efficiency condensing boilers for heating while a 115-ton evaporative cooler meets cooling needs. The design incorporates a central dedicated outdoor air system that operates on-demand control ventilation. All LED lights are on occupancy and daylight sensors throughout the space.
“For as long as I can remember, sustainability has been my passion,” said Joanne McCallum, CEO at mcCallumSather. When we founded mcCallumSather 25 years ago to create designs that promote positive contributions to the built environment, sustainable design was a fringe concept. Winning a national award from the Canada Green Building Council is a huge honour for us as designers and a testament to the focus the firm has been committed to for over two decades. We have and continue to demonstrate commitment and ambition, pushing boundaries to lead in the environmental transformation of the built environment to benefit all of society and we are hugely proud of what we have achieved.”
“It is a privilege to congratulate the outstanding achievements of this year’s Leadership and Green Building Excellence Award winners,” said Thomas Mueller, President and CEO of CaGBC. “While 2020 has brought much uncertainty, these award winners demonstrate that our industry remains focused on the important work before us. Addressing the need for sustained climate action, resilient buildings and communities, and human health and wellbeing will be critical in the decade ahead.”
Winners will be recognized throughout Building Lasting Change 2020 conference, taking place online on five consecutive Tuesdays from September 22 to October 20. Leadership award winners will also be profiled weekly beginning in early September, while Green Building Excellence winning projects will be explored in a series of Lunch and Learn sessions starting late October.
