Ministry of Transportation
Traffic Operations Centre
Opportunity
The Ministry of Transportation’s Emergency Response, Traffic Control and the Regional Action Group were scattered across locations, reducing efficiency. A new campus represented an opportunity to streamline its team; incorporate the latest technology; better equip its team for 24/7 operations, especially important in emergency situations; and support its staff who regularly manage high-stress situations. Phase 1 of the project was to be completed on a fast-tracked timeline, so the Traffic Operations Centre (TOC) could act as the security headquarters for the Pan Am Games.
Response
TOC, phase 1 of the campus, was zoned by function to provide clarity for its teams and added to the efficiency of mechanical and electrical systems. A modular layout was developed for the workshop, labs, warehouse, and open plan workplace. A palette of natural materials maximizes light reflectance while providing above-normal acoustics values. Stone from locally sourced quarries acted as the aggregate surface on the concrete floors and highlighted the work of its concrete and aggregate labs. The design features the latest security and automation design and a state-of-the-art AV. It opened in time for the Pan Am Games and met all schedule and budget goals.
