Hamilton, ON – November 14, 2024 – Joanne McCallum, Executive Director and Co-Founder of mcCallumSather, has announced her retirement. She will officially step down in February 2025, concluding a 28-year career characterized by her unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Reflecting on the motivation behind founding mcCallumSather in 1996, Joanne recalls the early days when sustainability was not yet part of mainstream conversations in architecture. “In the late ’80s and early ’90s, sustainable design was rarely discussed. It was frustrating to see how little attention was given to something so crucial,” she said. “The only way to truly follow my passion for sustainable design was to start my own firm.”
Throughout her career, Joanne championed innovative, eco-conscious design solutions that shaped the firm’s evolution and positioned mcCallumSather as a leading firm in the field. Under her leadership, the firm received the national Green Pioneer Award, recognizing her accomplishments and the impact of her sustainable vision. Her drive has also propelled mcCallumSather’s growth, demonstrating that integrated, sustainable design can benefit both the environment and a firm’s success.
“We’ve always been willing to take risks, to push for better, more sustainable designs. It’s been an amazing journey, but I truly believe we’re just at the beginning of making a huge difference,” Joanne reflected.
Looking ahead, Joanne is confident in the firm’s future, citing the leadership of her colleagues as the key to continued success. “The team at mcCallumSather is living our values of innovation, trust, and ambition. They are well-equipped to expand the opportunities for all our clients and continue to move the firm forward,” she said. “It’s no longer about ‘pushing the rope uphill’ but about capitalizing on the progress we’ve made.”
As Joanne transitions into retirement, the firm’s Executive, Principals, and Associates will ensure continuity of leadership. Joanne will maintain her connection to mcCallumSather as a mentor and as part of the Board of Directors in the role of Past Chair, where she will continue to share her expertise in sustainability. Drew Hauser will assume the position of Chair of the Board of Directors.
She expressed gratitude for the many relationships she’s built over the years and looks forward to a new chapter that allows her to focus on broader contributions outside the day-to-day operations of the firm.
mcCallumSather will host a special learning event in April 2025, honoring Joanne’s legacy and her role in advancing sustainable design. The event, hosted by mcCallumSather, presents keynote speaker Dr. David Suzuki, and will bring together industry leaders to celebrate her contributions and explore the future of sustainable architecture.
