COPPLEY LTD.

This year as COPPLEY LTD. celebrates its 135th anniversary, they are proud to announce that they will be relocating their 3-building operation into one modern facility. The new building will be located at 107 MacNab St. N., down the street from their current location in downtown Hamilton. Coppley will streamline their operations, creating a more efficient and environmentally sustainable footprint within the City of Hamilton.

Founded in 1883, Coppley has a rich history in Canadian men’s tailoring.  Starting in the 1990’s, they revolutionized the tailored clothing industry’s way of doing business by delivering made-to-measure suits within seven working days – faster than many tailors could do alterations.  Coppley has re-engineered the custom suit standard and created a competitive advantage.

Together with mcCallumSather architects and Blacks Point Development the project has been designed to ensure Coppley’s momentum is sustained. The building will maximize the use of space on the site, making processing and manufacturing methods more efficient, while respecting the streetscape by encouraging pedestrian activity and incorporating engaging landscaping along Cannon Street.  Coppley will provide employees with improved workspaces in a comfortable and modernized environment where staff can work together collaboratively as a team.  This design will also allow for future expansion to provide long-term sustainability for the company and for valued Coppley retailers.

The materials used in the design are layered to allude to the fabric of a suit and to provide a dynamic quality to the façade. Demolition on the MacNab Street North site has begun, and completion of the new building is estimated to be between 18 to 24 months.

From the new location, Coppley looks forward to continuing to provide high quality, ready-to-wear, custom tailored menswear and to maintaining a strong presence within the Hamilton community for many years to come.

Sandy Gillies, Vice President Finance, Coppley said: “Coppley has been located in three different buildings in the downtown core for many years and we are finally going to have the entire Coppley team under one roof. Being able to successfully recruit locally here in Hamilton was important to our staying in Hamilton. The downtown core is going through a huge revitalization and it’s very exciting for Coppley to be a part of that. We are made in Hamilton and we’ll continue to be made in Hamilton. This way, we can remain competitive allowing us to do 100% of the garment construction on-site.”

Bryan Dykstra, Partner, Blacks Point Development said:  “It has been a pleasure working with the Coppley team to define a custom building suitable for their entire operation.  It’s great news that Coppley has chosen to stay and re-invest in downtown Hamilton.  We are proud to work with such a historic company to ensure their continued success and to ensure that the 135 years of the bespoke suit making history continues in this city.”

Drew Hauser, Director, mcCallumSather said: “It is amazing to be a part of this progressive project, keeping a historic local business and its talented workforce in downtown Hamilton. The craftspeople at the heart of the company formed the inspiration for our design. Suiting, patternmaking, layering and stitches are reflected in the final design as well as detailing of how different and complementary materials come together in this mixed urban environment.”
