mcCallumSather Presents “Building for a Living Planet” – An Evening Dedicated to Sustainability

Hamilton, ON – February 11, 2025 – In celebration of Earth Day in April, mcCallumSather is pleased to present “Building for a Living Planet: Exploring the Role of Architecture in a Sustainable World,” an evening dedicated to sustainable architecture and honoring the legacy of mcCallumSather’s co-founder, Joanne McCallum. Joanne recently announced her plans to retire at the end of February 2025.

The event will take place on April 17, 2025, at Sanford Hall in Westinghouse HQ, and will feature a distinguished lineup of speakers and panelists, culminating in a reception celebrating Joanne McCallum’s contributions to the industry.

The free in-person event is a learning session that will bring together industry leaders to explore the role of architecture in a sustainable world. Inviting organizations, authorities, and other industry professionals, the event aims to spark meaningful dialogue and collaboration on sustainability in design.

The evening’s keynote speaker will be Dr. David Suzuki, award-winning scientist and environmentalist. Dr. Suzuki’s keynote presentation, “Humanity at a Crossroads: Transformation or Extinction,” will delve into the profound challenges and opportunities we face as a society. Drawing on his decades of experience, Suzuki will explore topics such as our impact on the environment, the necessity of rethinking societal priorities, and the importance of building a society that restores Earth’s sustainable productivity. His compelling insights will inspire attendees to prioritize environmental responsibility in architectural practices.

The panel discussion will further explore pressing topics such as the role of design in creating resilient and regenerative communities. The panelists will feature Dr. David Suzuki, mcCallumSather’s Joanne McCallum, and senior architect and sustainability expert, John Peterson and global sustainability leader and Net Zero carbon strategist, Lisa Bate. The discussion will be moderated by Alex Lukachko, Building Science consultant and educator at the University of Toronto and the Climate Design Initiative.

The evening will also include a 15-minute audience Q&A session, providing attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with these thought leaders.

A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Joanne McCallum Sustainable Catalyst Award, a biennial award to recognize a mcCallumSather team member whose actions serve as a catalyst for sustainable change and carries forward Joanne’s dedication to sustainable leadership in all aspects of her work and life.
