McMaster Innovation Park
Building 606, Glass Warehouse
Opportunity
Sitting at 606 Aberdeen in Hamilton, Building 606 and the Glass Warehouse formed part of the former Westinghouse Corporation factory that previously occupied the site. McMaster Innovation Park commissioned a feasibility study for the site to evaluate its options with regards to adapting the heritage buildings into a centre of commercial scale science and technology, in addition to other social uses.
Response
The feasibility study explored designs with a mix of laboratory spaces, common spaces, bridges and nests designed to facilitate creative collision, administration and event spaces. In addition, options developed allowed for future condo and/or hotel uses along with a floor of optional co-working space. As both the gateway and heart of the campus, solutions for each building were sensitive to how the two environments interact with each other and the surrounding property. The feasibility study also addressed how the two buildings represent a key connection to the proposed campus green space in the Master Plan.
