Grain & Grit Craft Brewery
Opportunity
Husband and wife team Joe and Lindsey Mrav, chose to renovate 2,174 sq. ft. of its microbrewery and restaurant, Grain & Grit. They had a tight timeline, and needed to tackle some unique challenges with the City of Hamilton’s permitting.
Response
With guidance on its drawings, the do-it-yourselfers completed much of the work on their own. The mechanics bay, transformed into an eclectic brewery includes processing spaces, administrative offices, a sample bar and retail area. Microbreweries remain relatively new, leading to some interesting questions about the zoning and variances that would be required. The conversion, an adaptive re-use of the existing mechanics space, exemplifies much of what is happening within the City of Hamilton, including a concentration of creative businesses and community spaces.
