Grain & Grit Craft Brewery

Working with husband and wife team Joe and Lindsey Mrav, we tackled the 2,174 SF renovation of one of Hamilton’s best-loved microbreweries and restaurants, Grain & Grit. We provided guidance on the permitting processes and drawings to help the do-it-yourselfers complete much of the work on their own. The result is a converted mechanics bay, transformed into an eclectic brewery. It is complete with processing spaces, administrative offices, a sample bar and retail area, finished in time for the duo to open on deadline in fall 2017.

With a tight timeline, there was a concerted effort to work with the owners to ensure we achieved the building permits, negotiating with the Plan Examiner to ensure the vision could be achieved.

Microbreweries remain relatively new, leading to some interesting questions about the zoning and variances that would be required. The conversion, an adaptive re-use of the existing mechanics space, exemplifies much of what is happening within the City of Hamilton, including a concentration of creative businesses and community spaces.
