Niagara College
NextGen Greenhouse
Opportunity
The NextGen greenhouse is a new, cutting-edge facility that will support advancements in applied research and hands-on student learning opportunities. Solely for the purpose of research, the new greenhouse will be a hub for the College’s Horticultural & Environmental Sciences Innovation Centre (HESIC), which aims to meet growing demands for applied research services from industry and together, with the existing Teaching Greenhouse, will provide an expanded learning environment and new opportunities for students in Niagara College’s School of Environment and Horticulture.
Response
The greenhouse features five individually controlled bays for precise environmental management, a clean lab, vertical grow room, horticulture laboratory, meeting room, office, and mechanical room with backup generator. Designed for energy efficiency, it maximizes solar gain with a south orientation, using high-performance materials such as a glass roof and polycarbonate walls in the growing bays. The headhouse is clad in Shou Sugi Ban charred cedar. The greenhouse also incorporates low-temperature, in-slab heating in the Head House and Growing Bays, with infrastructure in place for future activation. This allows research into efficient heating methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the main boiler plant is set up to eventually run on renewable natural gas.
