The Valley Park Library and Recreation Centre groundbreaking ceremony took place on November 2, 2020. The 26,500SF, $9.5M project represents an understanding of the space’s evolving needs, incorporating future-ready design that reflects the exciting evolution of libraries and prepares for further growth within the surrounding population. With LEED Gold Targets, the buildings will incorporate green technologies and natural materials while serving as a community centered meeting space.
In 2018, we began working with the City of Hamilton on the addition and renovation of the Valley Park Library and Recreation Centre, two incredibly valued spaces in the Stoney Creek area. Set to be complete in the fall of 2021, the updated Valley Park Library and Recreation Centre will provide nearby residents with a vibrant, sustainable and engaging community hub, inclusive of meeting rooms, an aquatics centre and daycare.
With limestone and copper accents, high ceilings, featured wood accents and photovoltaic panels, our team is updating the façade of the existing building, connecting it to the surrounding landscape. Inside the library, mcCallumSather and team have developed a flexible design that will easily adapt to the library’s collection and allows the seating space to move and adapt. The addition of two, 60-person multi-purpose rooms allow the community to host a new range of events, a section of the project funded by the Heritage Green Community Trust.
Connecting the library and recreation centre will be an exterior plaza with shading, seating and an engaging landscape plan. In the process, we created a new drop-off area that will be shared between the library and recreation centre, closer to the entrances of both.
The renovation of the recreation centre will feature a new entry, lightening up the space with a reflective and smooth silver finish rather than the dark metal that previously existed in place. The updated recreation centre includes a new dance studio, more multi-purpose rooms, an aquatic centre and daycare, providing residents with an expansive and valuable community asset.
