Our Heritage work represents an expanding specializations for our team, and our firm’s list of award-winning heritage projects including 541 Eatery & Exchange, Phoenix Pub & Restaurant and Hamilton City Hall. Under general supervision, the Junior Architectural Intern or intermediate architect, will work on restoration, conservation, adaptive reuse, as well as assistance with heritage impact assessments and feasibility studies. The intern or intermediate architect shall prepare drawings and research material with project teams.

This position reports to the Principals and heritage team at mcCallumSather.

Responsibilities

  • Support heritage architectural team
  • Attend team meetings, presentations and sub-consultant coordination meetings as required
  • With assistance prepare drawings, schedules, detail design and sketches from conceptual design, through tender to construction
  • Ensure Revit, Autocad and Sketch up Standards, quality assurance and quality control procedures are followed during drawing planning and design.  Proficient with Indesign and Microsoft Office Software
  • Work to and meet project time lines
  • Influence, assist in developing and meet project budgets
  • With assistance conduct Construction Administration duties including field reviews and coordination, review and issuance of Change Orders, Site Instruction, Certificate for Payment, Clarifications, and RFI responses on an as required basis
  • Coordinate project information and work with all internal and/or external disciplines including but not limited architectural, electrical, geotechnical and civil as required Design Portfolio

Other Assets would include:

  • Clear writing and communication capabilities
  • Understanding of general building science principles, OBC and related codes

Role
Under general supervision, the Junior Architectural Intern will prepare design drawings of existing facilities, and prepare drawings and/or sketchup models for renovations and new construction of moderate complexity based on verbal instructions, sketches and/or formal documents. Position requires preparing sketches, plans, section details and other design tools or visual presentation materials. This position reports to the Principals and design teams at mcCallumSather.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Architecture from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • 1-3 years of regional experience post masters graduation

Intermediate Interior Designer

Reporting to and under the general supervision of the Senior Interior Designer, the Intermediate Interior Designer will fulfill an essential role in the office by working alongside a design team to establish design concepts that reflects the firm’s passion for creative and sustainable design. You have design and technical skills to contribute to both stand-alone and integrated projects.  In addition, this role involves active engagement within the firm to promote the firm culture and engage positively with all staff members.  Establishing, nurturing and maintaining client relationships is an important component of this position.  Specific roles and responsibilities are outlined below.

Responsibilities

  • Work on Interior Design component of concurrent projects within mcCallumSather.
  • Collaborate in the development of concept design through planning, sketching, rendering
  • Select directional images and finishes.
  • Schematic: Acquire and coordinate samples from vendors
  • Formulate furniture direction
  • Further develop concept design with sketches, thumbnails, plans and the creation of specialty finishes
  • Refine finish selections
  • Design Development: Flush out and refine the approved design language into buildable drawings
  • Assist in any information the Specification writer may require
  • Review and implement design specifications with the Specification personnel, re FF & E, hardware, plumbing and architectural finishes
  • Coordinate with outside project consultants such as lighting, Mechanical, electrical, structural, signage, kitchen consultants, etc. as necessary to complete a well-coordinated project.
  • Work with Project Management in the development of specialty custom built items.
  • Develop a complete drawing package, including detailing, elevations and plans to mcCallumSather standards,
  • Compilation and finalization of all FF& E pieces with sufficient information to pass through to the Specification writer.
  • Develop a small drawing package including full design intent of all millwork and custom furniture as per mcCallumSather standards.
  • Continue Coordination with outside project consultants such as lighting, mechanical, electrical, structural, signage, kitchen consultants etc. as necessary to complete a well-coordinated project.
  • Review and implement changes and additions with the Specification writer/Senior Designer, re:  FF&E, hardware, plumbing and architectural finishes.
  • Prepare contract drawings, schedules, detail design and sketches from conceptual design, through tender to construction
  • Provide sufficient information when requested by the Project Management team in the development of budgets.
  • Answer vendor/contractor’s questions.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals
  • Provide site clarifications when necessary
  • Review with Project Manager, Team Leader and Project Leaders.
  • Attend client meeting, presentations and sub-consultant coordination meeting as required
  • Ensure CAD / Revit Standards, quality assurance and quality control procedures are followed during drawing planning and production
  • Work to and meet project time lines

Software knowledge

It is essential to have a strong skill base in the utilization of the following software:

  • Revit
  • AutoCAD
  • Sketch-Up
  • Power Point
  • MS Word
  • MS Excel

It is also considered useful to learn the following applications if not currently familiar with:

  • Microsoft Project
  • Illustrator
  • InDesign

Performance measurements

Intermediate Mechanical Designer

The Intermediate Mechanical Designer plays an important role in the design team. Our ideal candidate is a team player with the ability to receive and execute instructions from the Senior Engineer or Project Manager with minimal supervision.  The Intermediate Designer will provide guidance and delegate to the junior engineering staff.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with and support senior personnel; oversee and direct junior members of the production team
  • Prepare contract drawings, schedules, details and sketches from conceptual design, through to tender and construction
  • Ensure CAD Standards, Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures are followed during drawing planning and production
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, ASHRAE, NFPA and industry standards
  • Ability to apply prescriptive requirements of mechanical building services engineering codes with minimal supervision provided by senior staff
  • Strong experience in planning and managing projects, preparation of materials, cost/timing estimates, reporting and producing high level schematics/specifications
  • Experience in HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection and Medical Gases with institutional, healthcare and civic projects of various size and complexity
  • Work to and meet project timelines; assist in development of and meeting project budgets
  • Co-ordinate project requirements with the all team members
  • Support Construction Administration personnel including field reviews and co-ordination, review and issuance of Change Orders, Clarifications and RFI responses on an occasional or as required basis
  • Co-ordinate project information and work with all internal and/or external disciplines, including but not limited to, architectural, electrical, structural and civil as required

Performance measurement

  • Quality of work meets / exceeds requirements and specifications of the Lead Mechanical Engineer, project architects / engineers and clients

Minimum requirements

  • 5 years of experience in the preparation, drafting, and design of engineering drawings using appropriate standards for HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection and Medical Gases
  • Possession of a solid understanding of construction protocols and processes and a proven ability to interpret contract documents (drawings and specifications)
  • Well-experienced and knowledgeable with AutoCAD and MS Office along with experience in REVIT
  • Ability to use HAP software load calculation and/or E-Quest for modeling
  • Ability to perform complete and detailed site take-off
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks and demonstrate a flexible approach to work assignments
