Intermediate Interior Designer

Reporting to the Principal and Senior Interior Designer, the Intermediate Interior Designer will fulfill an essential role, working alongside our team to establish design concepts that reflect the firm’s passion for creative and sustainable design. The Intermediate Designer will have design and technical skills, contributing to both stand-alone and integrated projects. The candidate will establish, nurture and maintain client relationships, and actively engaging with the mcCallumSather team to promote the firm culture. Specific roles and responsibilities are outlined below.

Responsibilities

• Work on concurrent interior design projects within mcCallumSather
• Collaborate in the development of concept design through planning, sketching, rendering
• Select directional images and finishes
• Acquire and coordinate samples from vendors
• Formulate furniture direction
• Further develop concept design with sketches, thumbnails, plans and the creation of specialty finishes
• Refine finish selections
• Flush out and refine the approved design language into buildable drawings
• Assist with information for Specification writers, as required
• Review and implement design specifications with the specification personnel, regarding FF&E, hardware, plumbing and architectural finishes
• Coordinate with outside project consultants such as lighting, mechanical, electrical, structural, signage, kitchen consultants, etc. as necessary to complete a well-coordinated project
• Work with Project Management in the development of specialty custom built items
• Develop a complete drawing package, including detailing, elevations and plans to mcCallumSather standards
• Compilation and finalization of all FF&E pieces with sufficient information to pass through to the specification writer
• Develop a small drawing package including full design intent of all millwork and custom furniture as per mcCallumSather standards
• Continue Coordination with outside project consultants such as lighting, mechanical, electrical, structural, signage, kitchen consultants etc. as necessary to complete a well-coordinated project.
• Review and implement changes and additions with the Specification writer/Senior Designer, re: FF&E, hardware, plumbing and architectural finishes
• Prepare contract drawings, schedules, detail design and sketches from conceptual design, through tender to construction
• Provide sufficient information when requested by the Project Management team in the development of budgets
• Answer vendor/contractor’s questions
• Review shop drawings and submittals
• Provide site clarifications when necessary
• Review with Project Manager, Team Leader and Project Leaders
• Attend client meeting, presentations and sub-consultant coordination meeting as required
• Ensure CAD / Revit Standards, quality assurance and quality control procedures are followed during drawing planning and production
• Work to and meet project time lines

Software knowledge

It is essential to have a strong skill base in the utilization of the following software:
• Revit
• AutoCAD
• Sketch-Up
• Power Point
• MS Word
• MS Excel

It is also considered useful to learn the following applications if not currently familiar with:
• Microsoft Project
• Illustrator
• InDesign

Performance measurements

• Quality of work meets or exceeds requirements and specifications of Principals, project architects and clients
• Projects are completed on time
• Demonstrated ability to work with various levels of people within mcCallumSather and within client organizations.
• Capability in design, technical and construction
• Understanding of the Ontario Building Code
• Versatility, flexibility and a willingness to work within constant changing priorities
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects, priorities and workflows and meet deadlines
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, as dealing with clients and consultants

Minimum Requirements – Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

• 4-6 years of interior design experience
• You are comfortable interacting and communicating with a range of people;
• Strong design skills
• Experience with healthcare, public sector and commercial projects at a variety of scales
• Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code
• Possession of a solid understanding of construction and Contract Administration process
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
• Highly motivated individual who works independently
• Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and amicable manner
• Rigorous attention to detail and accuracy

Minimum Requirements – Education/Licensing/Certification

• Intern interior Designer with ARIDO and working towards NCIDQ designation
• Drivers License

The Intermediate Mechanical Engineer plays an important role in the design team. Our ideal candidate is a team player with the ability to receive and execute instructions from the Senior Engineer or Project Manager with minimal supervision.  The Intermediate Engineer will provide guidance and delegate to the junior engineering staff.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with and support senior personnel; oversee and direct junior members of the production team
  • Prepare contract drawings, schedules, details and sketches from conceptual design, through to tender and construction
  • Ensure CAD Standards, Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures are followed during drawing planning and production
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, ASHRAE, NFPA and industry standards
  • Ability to apply prescriptive requirements of mechanical building services engineering codes with minimal supervision provided by senior staff
  • Strong experience in planning and managing projects, preparation of materials, cost/timing estimates, reporting and producing high level schematics/specifications
  • Experience in HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection and Medical Gases with institutional, healthcare, laboratory and condo projects of various size and complexity
  • Work to and meet project timelines; assist in development of and meeting project budgets
  • Support Construction Administration personnel including field reviews and co-ordination, review and issuance of
  • Change Orders, Clarifications and RFI responses on an occasional or as required basis
  • Co-ordinate project information and work with all internal and/or external disciplines, including but not limited to, architectural, electrical, structural and civil as required

Performance measurement

  • Quality of work meets / exceeds requirements and specifications of the Lead Mechanical Engineer, project architects / engineers and clients
  • Projects are completed on budget and on time
  • Demonstrated ability to work with various levels of people within our firm and within client organizations

Minimum requirements

  • 5 years of experience in the preparation and design of engineering drawings using appropriate standards for HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection and Medical Gases
  • 5 years of experience in HVAC and Hydronic system design and selection
  • Possession of a solid understanding of construction protocols and processes and a proven ability to interpret contract documents (drawings and specifications)
  • Ability to use HAP software load calculation
  • Ability to perform complete and detailed site take-off
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks and demonstrate a flexible approach to work assignments

We are in search of a Junior Architectural Intern who will work directly with our project managers and project teams to prepare design drawings of existing facilities, drawings and/or sketchup models for renovations and drawing and/or sketchup models of new construction of moderate complexity based on verbal instructions, sketches and/or formal documents. The position requires the ability to prepare sketches, plans, section details and other design tools or visual presentation materials as required. This position reports to the Principals, Associates and Design Team Leads.

 

Qualifications include:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture
  • Demonstrated experience with REVIT, Sketchup, Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Understanding of general building science principles
  • Passion for design and interest in sustainable design
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal

Duties include

 

  • Support / Develop architectural designs

We are in search of a Quality Control Specialist who has the demonstrated technical and leadership skills to assist in the oversight and execution of our firm’s quality assurance program. Our ideal candidate must have a strong, demonstrated understanding of REVIT, drawing production and detailing, specification writing, document coordination between all disciplines, building sciences, client service, team building and quality control. They have a passion for thoughtful design and lifelong learning, with a strong problem solving mindset. They will work closely with the firm principals, project managers and project teams ensuring projects meet our expectations and document deliverables.

 

Qualifications include:

  • 10+ years’ experience required
  • Diploma in Architectural Technology or Degree in Architecture
  • CCCA Designation or training associated with achieving this designation would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated competencies with REVIT, project coordination, team communication, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of sustainable design principles
  • Deep understanding of building systems
  • Understanding of building construction and sequence of construction
  • Understanding and experience working with the Ontario Building Code & National Building Code
  • Understanding and experience working with AODA

 

Duties include

 

  • Review of documents with in the office as they are developed in each phase of a project (Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents)
  • Coordination of documents between specifications and drawings
  • Coordination of documents between disciplines (architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical…. Etc)
  • Review of documents to ensure compliance with various codes such as the Ontario Building Code, AODA
  • Meet with team members to discuss issues with the documents and to provide clear direction to the team on what is required to maintain the quality of the documents.
  • Mentoring of junior team members on the proper way to produce documents as outlined in the office standards and procedures.
